Describe the function
Decide what the space needs to do: hold reading materials, provide a place for keys or make a seat more comfortable. Describe the function without naming a product. This leaves room for an object you already own to solve the problem.
Look beyond the usual room
A tray, basket or lamp may be more useful in another part of the home. Try a temporary arrangement before moving everything around it. Check stability, electrical suitability and access; an object should be appropriate for the use, not simply the right color.
Measure the real space
Allow for doors, walkways and the way people move. An item that fits a photograph may not fit the room in daily use. A rough measurement and a short trial can reveal more than a long shopping list.
Buy only for the remaining gap
If something is still missing, write down the dimensions and purpose before shopping. Compare the care needs as well as the appearance. An intentional purchase can be satisfying without becoming the start of a complete room replacement.
