Read the plant’s care information and ask a local nursery about suitability for your conditions. Start with a small number of plants whose needs you can learn. If pets or children may reach them, check plant safety using a reliable species-specific source before buying.
Think about water leaving the pot
Choose a container and growing medium appropriate for the plant, with suitable drainage. Consider where excess water will go, especially indoors or above a neighbor’s space. Water needs vary with the plant, container and conditions; a fixed weekly schedule is not a substitute for checking.
Watch and adjust
Keep a short note of planting, watering and noticeable changes. Look at the plant and growing medium rather than responding to every change with more water or fertilizer. Follow product instructions and seek appropriate local guidance if you cannot identify a problem.
